In the UK event’s fifth year, local personality Annelies James hosted the ABP Southampton Marathon. The day consisted of a full marathon, a half marathon, a 10k and a children’s fun run in the afternoon. An average of 30,000 spectators celebrate 10,000 runners throughout the day, kicking off with a 9am start for the marathon and half marathon participants. The day is supported by an estimated 850 local volunteers, many of which are teams who receive a donation to their charity of choice for participating.

Southampton’s popular Guildhall Square, in the centre of the UK city Cultural Quarter, transformed into the core Race Village for runners to prepare and be close to both start and finish line. The event has become a highly anticipated event in the Hampshire calendar, with over £1million surged into the city’s economy for the weekend of the event. As sports tourism becomes more accessible, the city is hoping to see this number grow for the 2019 event.

Annelies James says, “Southampton UK has a dynamic and inclusive community which is growing in strength year on year. It’s inspiring to see this city grow and being able to play a key role in one of its largest events is an honour and exciting challenge. Our coastal community is happy to welcome residents from our neighbouring cities and towns to come together in a celebration of teamwork, fundraising and health.”

James continues, “It is fantastic that more and more people are noticing the benefits of running on both our physical and mental health. Events like this marathon offer a non-competitive environment to allow for all abilities to participate. Seeing Southampton embrace fitness and turn out to support their family, friends and teammates is what makes the day so special. There are so many stories in each set of shoes. There’s a lot of participants raising money for charities close to their hearts. There is so much determination, passion and laughter in one event, with a community and friendly approach which I feel stands Southampton apart from other marathons. It’s an amazing opportunity to be the voice for the event, I’m keen to add some laughter and motivate everyone to make it even more memorable.“

In the recent media attention of Virgin Money’s London Marathon, their pledge to become a changemaker for sustainability in mass-participant events has been taken on board by organisers of the Southampton Marathon ABP. Runners were offered Drink Smartpacks as opposed to their plastic bottle predecessors, ensuring 99.6% less single use plastic use against the 2018 event. The bottle swap alone offers a 75% decrease in carbon footprint, all supported by the events water station partner, Utilita Energy. Organisers offer runners post-race gift bags made of paper instead of plastic for the first year, donated leftover racing tee shirts to European charities and donated leftover food supplies to Hampshire’s leading homeless charity, The Society of Saint James.
